About

The Homemade summercamp is a week that is open for beginners as well as experts and everyone in between interested in exploring ideas in art & technology or creating objects for sound, light or movement. The participants can bring their individual projects or work in groups and get inspired by related topics from all other participants. During this self-organized research week we will do workshops and talks, run experiments, cook & eat together, go hiking and there will also be time for party and relaxing.

A dense and inspring programme of workshops will be co-developed collectively throughout the week. Also planning in advance is allowed.

LoRa Mesh
  • planned for Sunday/Monday (when Tamberg has reached) right ahead, wanna join? Maybe add your name and what you want to install :)
  • sva will bring 4 devices (1 heltec v3, 2 heltec v4, and last one need to look up: a flat kind)
    • want to install reticulum on one of them, would be great to be a group on that tasks... and yes, I do have personal contacts to the reticulum folks, maybe we can get some support from there...
    • have to leave on Monday, looking for a godfather to take care of the 4 nodes while I am away
How to build custom USB human interface devices

Have you ever wondered, how USB-Peripherals, such as mice, keyboards, slideshow-presenter-gadgets, joysticks and joypads work? Do you have a wacky idea for a USB-connected foot-pedal or a custom volume or multimedia controller, but didn't know how to connect your electronics to a computer?

If there is interest in the topic, I would prepare a presentation and hands-on-workshop for Wednesday or Thursday Afternoon.

In the presentation I'd introduce you to the long, boring specs of the USB-HID standard, which shall serve to give you some nifty ideas on what you could possibly build, apart from custom or minimal keyboards and game controllers. I can also demonstrate some silly things you can build, from the mythic Any-Key, to mouse jigglers and on to automation solutions and interactive menu-systems.

If there is further interest, I can expand this into a hands on workshop: I'll bring the Microcontrollers with USB-Plugs (Digispark clones), you bring the buttons, switches, potentiometers, rotary encoders or sensors and I can help you set up your system to program the MCUs with the USB-stack and get you started reading the GPIO-pins that you solder to your inputs.

Free your Android!
  • sva has to re-install her phone anyway since a while, and planning to do so for Sunday during the day.
  • if you wanna join please contact me (e.g. telegram or mail) with the exact model info of your phone, then we can see what alternative Operating Systems can be done
  • else you can also join me and watch how its done

Kids activities

Families & Kids are welcome. Please advise your age and needs. This will help us organise a kids programm.

Infrastructure

Network & Internet

Since Girlen is quite remote we needed to bring our own internet. There is some internet connection by telephone cable but its very slow and not suitable for 80+ guests. The plan was to install a Teltonika TRB500 with a directional 5G antenna as primary internet connection, and a 4G router as backup. Unfortunately something broke one the way there, and after testing the setup a few days earlier in Bitwäscherei, the Teltonika was dead and could not be reflashed / reset.

We used our backup plan with a single TP-Link MR110 4G outdoor router, and a Gl.Inet Flink 3 Wifi router inside the house. This was enough for our needs and the Flink 3 was able to handle 60-80 concurrent users easily. It was even possible to access the internet from the camping grounds around 100 meters from the house.

By using the same SSID and password on all routers, phones and laptops would automatically switch between the indoor and outdoor routers.

GirlenCom

To have a very efficient week we used the services of GirlenCom to install analog phones in and around the house. By installing an Ascom Econom 4/10 PABX (private automatic branch exchange) we were able to connect up to 10 phones in the house. Ordering toilet paper when it was empty or reaching the beer fridge from the safety department proved to be very helpful.

Our friendly service technicians and hotline operators were busy making sure everyone at Homemade would stay connected.

Stikka Centraal

As always, our stikka printing facility was operational from day one until the the very end, making sure the printers were ready and the sticker rolls rolling. As well as their inofficial Brushograph Centraal offering which the fine people from stikka centraal run in their free time.

closing party

We move back to Bitwäscherei Zurich August 1st for a closing party with concerts and food.

Should we organize a bus transport to Zurich? Yes we did it!!

Other summercamps accross the globe

More than 20 camps are connected through the Feral Labs network, co-funded by the European Union – Feral Labs (2019-2021) & Rewilding Cultures (2022-2026)

“The Feral Labs Network is a network of temporary dislocated hubs for research in art, technology and communities. It’s members share a common interest in art-science research and contemporary do-it-yourself (DIY) & do-it-with-others (DIWO) communities.“ We are happy to be part of this extensive network across Europe!
